History of the Connecticut Counseling Association

75 YEARS OF SERVICE TO CONNECTICUT

THE CONNECTICUT COUNSELING ASSOCIATION CELEBRATES ITS DIAMOND ANNIVERSARY

Throughout our seventy-five year history, CCA has actively provided services to counselors throughout the state. 1927 saw the first guidance conference in Connecticut and the establishment of an informal organization. In October of 1928, Connecticut petitioned the National Vocational Guidance Association for a Connecticut chapter and was officially recognized in 1929.

On April 15, 1957, the Connecticut Personnel and Guidance Association received its official charter as a branch of the American Personnel and Guidance Association. By 1972 three divisions were active within the CPGA structure. Presently CCA has six divisions, two professional interest committees and one regional chapter.

Yearly professional development conferences, featuring nationally known speakers, provide for professional growth and networking. 1982 saw the birth of two professional publications: the award-winning (best Newsletter, 2001, medium sized branch) Connecticut Counselor is published quarterly and dialog, a juried journal published biannually.

CCA has actively advocated for legislation beneficial to counselors. As early as 1968 the association advocated for guidance for career development and in 1983 the CCA (CPGA) began the effort to establish professional counselor licensing. This initiative reached fruition in September of 1997 when the Licensure Bill was signed into law. Other legislative efforts on behalf of Connecticut counselors provided Vendorship and Privileged Communication for LPC’s in 2000.

Keeping pace with technological advances, CCA provides additional services to members through a website and listserv. The association promotes and encourages excellence in counseling through the presentation of annual awards. Preparations are in progress to celebrate our 75th anniversary at the Annual Spring conference in April of 2002.

Annual Leadership Development Workshops provide for a smooth transition from one year to the next. The efforts of dedicated leaders over the past seventy-five years has made the Connecticut Counseling Association a vital, growing organization committed to counseling excellence in Connecticut.
